Iceberg B15A

December 9th, 2007 andrea

Dr. Douglas MacAyeal, Professor in the Department of the Geophysical Sciences at the University of Chicago sent me this moving sound file, as he describes:
“…that’s the sound of Iceberg B15A ‘breaking up’ (off Cape Adare, 27 October, 2005)…it’s really a seismometer record that’s been ‘sped up’ by a factor of 1000 to make it audible.”

McMurdo from Discovery Hut

One very unexpected effect being in Antarctica has had on me is to magnify life, particularly human life. Each time I have gotten away from McMurdo and into the silence, the escape from the crowds of people and machine noise of New York that I thought I craved, I find my ears searching for any tiny voice or machine sound. I created this short, very quiet binaural recording from the site of Discovery Hut, in it you can very faintly hear the hum of the waste treatment plant:

NASA’s Radarsat

December 8th, 2007 andrea

P1000711Yesterday Nik Sinkola gave a group of us a tour of a place in the hills above McMurdo known as Radarsat, NASA’s satellite tracking station. The system tracks about 35 US, Canadian, and European satellites in coordination with other stations around the world. The tracking antenna, a giant dish, is housed in a Buckminster Fuller-inspired ‘bucky ball’ with thin mylar walls. Under high winds, the inside of the structure vibrates like a giant drum. Here’s a binaural recording of the interior:

South Pole Call

As part of the overnight snow school (aka ‘happy camper’) we learned how to make HF radio calls from the field to McMurdo and The Pole. Many more photos if you click on the image here of Dr. Adam Soule and the HF antenna including a group of us setting up the antenna and the ice cave we slept in.
Here’s a binaural recording of our team making the call and having a bit of fun:
