Avalanche of Media on the Antarctic Discoveries of Dr. Adam Lewis

August 9th, 2008 andrea

On December 8th, I interviewed Dr. Adam Lewis (listen here), but at the time knew only a hint of the importance of his research, which includes some of the most significant finds to come out of Antarctica, including fossilized remains of previously unknown species.

A paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by Lewis and colleagues Dr. David Marchant, Boston University, Dr. Allan Ashworth, also at North Dakota State University, and several others has triggered a media blitz.

Here are some of my favorite articles with some very compelling images:
Science Daily
BBC News
National Geographic
another National Geographic
the Daily Mail – short, but I like the headline about the ‘Lost World’

Personal Climate Change Stories, recorded in Singapore

August 4th, 2008 andrea

During the Luminous Green workshop at Singapore Management University during the ISEA festival, I was able to conduct short interviews with 5 of the international participants about their personal experiences with climate change. The range of backgrounds and experiences was very wide, from the Malaysian jungle to the north of Finland. Sound files for each of the interviews are posted here, with a podcast link of all the interviews combined. Apologies for the noise in the background of the recordings, but perhaps enjoy the Singapore street sounds. Posted in chronological order:

Jura Kaario speaks of his experiences in Finland growing up near a frozen lake

Isrizal, a Singaporean activist, talks about the loss of his boyhood home and learning how to ask permission to impact the environment

Singaporean Yeow Ching Shiang explains why ‘Christmas every day’ is not as good as it sounds

Dr. Lanfranco Aceti discusses desertification in Italy and the influence of the US on Italian culture

Singaporean designer Jeremy Sun Ting Kung talks about growing up in Taiwan and how design can change behavior
